Remembering Bill
by Rani Arbo The first time I met Bill, in the spring of 2001, we were both at Knoll Farm for Peter and Helen's wedding. I found him shingling a tiny yurt outhouse up Bragg Hill and offered my unskilled help. And so we nailed, and all the while he sang, punctuating his songs with wry comments about my hammer skills. Every song was preceded by "Maybe you know this one?" and then he would launch another mischievous, melodic tune with many verses, of which he remembered three or four, and snatches beyond that. He seemed to have hundreds of these songs, and pulled out about as many of them as nails from his pocket that afternoon. The last time I visited Bill, in the summer of 2013, we sat down together on the couch in the library yurt so he could show me his new concertina, on loan from a friend. "I think I could learn to play this in my old age," he said, noting that it was easier on knobby fingers than something with strings. He had written out a list of 14 songs in his spidery blue script; these, he thought, would be good ones to start with. Wabash Cannonball was at the top, followed by the Yellow Rose of Texas and Leatherwing Bat. Not being a concertina player, I did my best — we tested it out, located some chords for Amazing Grace, and wrote them down. Next, Bill presented a sheaf of lined paper, upon which he had handwritten and alphabetized a list of more than 450 songs and rounds. "There are many more, but these are the ones I can recall," he said. He suggested that some of these could be added to a book of songs for gatherings (in part, I believe, to solve the problem of being the only one who knew his favorites). That summer, we recorded part of a group sing in Guest Yurt. Listening back, I'm struck by how playful his singing is, full of dramatic pauses and trills, hey-hos, master storytelling and joy. I wish we'd known more of his verses to sing along, as he wanted, but it was also beautiful and moving to hear his tremulous, musical voice reaching back into memory for yet another verse. Bill's list is full of sea shanties, children's songs, college songs, and traditional folk songs from the U.S., Germany, and Mexico; it includes many songs from Joseph Marais, the Clancy Brothers, Harry Belafonte, Glen Yarborough, the Trapp family, and other popular folk revivalists of the 1950s. It also includes popular compositions from the late 1800s and early 1900s like "Grandfather's Clock" and "Nicodemus," "Bill Bailey," and "Alexander's Ragtime Band" that have remained favorites in parlor rooms (and yurts) for more than a hundred years. NB: Bill's tally (453) includes several doubles I removed from the list, and a few I left in (like "Jambalaya"/"Big Fun on the Bayou. I corrected a few of the spellings (of International songs in particular) so that others can more easily search for them. A few were undecipherable to me; please correct the titles if you know them. I kept Bill's asterisks — his favorites — and notes about the source of some of the songs. Rounds for Book for Gathering Bill meant to have 50 but skipped #45, so there are 49 here. 1.
